The Madonna Superbowl Halftime Show

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, just kidding.

My first impression of Madonna when she started moving during her halftime show at the Superbowl was that she looked afraid she was going to fall over. I still got that impression  half way into the act, although she did appear more physically comfortable in the last couple of songs.

Was she singing live or was she lip synching? It didn't sound live to me, but I've never seen her live so I probably can't tell.

My main overall impression of this show is that it looked to me like watching a long music video. A lot of  faux energy and generic choreography with people walking around in 'edgy' costumes.

It was all harmless enough and more or less musical (were there any live musicians?), but I have to ultimately give Madonna a grade of C + for this thing.

NBC never mentioned the word Madonna from the time she finished until the game resumed. No mention of her at all. Maybe not much of an impression.

I was entertained...the marching band , the choir, the special effects, songs(eh not so much). Being entertained is all one can ask for.

You have to admit though, just as many people are bored with all the superficial spectacle. In a very real sense , if you've seen one of these things you've seen them all, even if the particulars of the 'light show' advance from year to year.

My first impression of Madonna when she started moving during her halftime show at the Superbowl was that she looked afraid she was going to fall over.

That's funny because I had the same thought, only I also thought she was afraid because if she fell she'd break a hip. She moved like a granny, and that's really about how old she is... but I have to give her credit for looking good for her age.

Really not a very good halftime show... oh well, half time was not that important this time because the game was AWESOME!! Congrats NY and Eli!!

Lotta NYG injuries... but nothing helps a recorvery like having won the championship; all the bandages in the world have less effect than that.

I have never been a big Madonna fan, so I'm not really familiar with all of her dance moves. I thought it was easy to notice she looked unsure of herself for the first few minutes tonight and was being careful, but I really couldn't swear to it, so I'm glad someone else noticed it.

As for the game, as someone who is not a fan of either of these two teams, I would say this was a middle of the road Super Bowl, in terms of excellence of play and drama. There weren't very many really outstanding plays, but there was a little drama at the end. It was a good game, but not a great game.

My first impression of Madonna when she started moving during her halftime show at the Superbowl was that she looked afraid she was going to fall over.

She actually did tip at one point, up on the grandstand, and had to grab a dancer to keep from falling. She looked stoned.

It was a good show, not super fantastic or anything, to be frank, I got sleepy watching it and dosed off a bit... taped it though, and watch it again, I didn't miss much when I dosed off.... The end was a big let down as far as I'm concerned...

C'mon, she was lipsynching throughout. Microphone's this close, this far away voice doesn't change volume or pitch.

Was better than last years half time performance. Better than Tyler's attempt at the Star Spangled Banner. Based on recent half time performances I would say it was definitely above average.

Lip-sync or not she still is hot...boots and all.

I thought the whole thing (halftime) was an embarrassing crapfest. The Super Bowl spectacle is groaning under the weight of it's own excess.

Maybe next year they can cut to the chase and just have Cesare in a luxury box and lions on the field .

    I appreciate your comment.

People don't usually lose their singing voice, though, until they are quite a bit older than Madonna is now. It is not unusual for singers to perform well into their 70's.

Yeah well I am offended that the stage show (the stage/effects) was offshored to Canada. Sacrilege (yes that was sarcasm).

Actually the stage show itself blew me away, EXTREMELY well done.

If you say so. If I had been drinking it would have given me a headache.

This kind of 'spectacle' appeals to some/many people . I understand that. I don't think it says a lot for the music involved though.

Because they said it was LIVE, don't you think it would have gotten out that it was not?

She also did a short interview and she was very nervous, she hasn't been out like this for quite some time. If you don't sing , you can lose your voice/pitch/tone

    Nervousness can affect the voice.

    I think she did great.

I didn't watch the show.. or the game..

Years ago, I enjoyed the half-time shows with the marching bands. Now, I wouldn't watch it if I was paid and given front row seating. Seems to me that the more dancers, the more outragious minimal costuming, the more laser lights, the more "noise", the less talent of the "super star".

I always enjoyed going to a concert or stage show where the artist performed on their own merits, not the elaborate background dancers/etc., that draw attention away from the "star" that probably doesn't have the talent needed to occupy the stage alone.

Think of great and talented artists of the past.. Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Janis Joplin, Elvis, Patsy Cline, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin and on and on and on.. Gosh, those artists put on such a show by themselves, with maybe a few back-up singers and a small band.. but they were such powerful artists, that there was no space on the stage for half dressed dancers, a light show, all the huge props, and all extra junk that helps to fill "the space" that a performer can't fill. The big stars of "yesterday" OWNED the stage..

just pieces of an old woman

In the last decade, we've had Prince, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, the Who, the Rolling Stones--all of whom are older or the same age as Madonna. Where is your disdain for men who can't act their age, or is it the continued impression that women ought to dry up and blow away the minute they pass 35?

I think Madonna is about my age or maybe a little younger. I am 58. I have always liked Madonna.

She puts a lot of money into the performance for the lights and music. I thought she did very well.

To be truthful, when C-lo and the choir were singing the last song, tears came to my eyes.

YES, it made me cry, and I don't know why. I have gotten teary-eyed before when I hear

a choral group. Go figure! Maybe it was a longing for the good old days when Madonna

was younger and I was too. LOL.

really? she did a show with the same songs in the same order for a 15 minute concert that was intermixed with songs that hadn't been recorded yet, like Nicky Minaj or MIA, and Cee Lo and LMFAO. WOW!!! that is very forward thinking of her.

(I wonder how many of those that I mentioned were even alive 25 years ago).

The AP seems to be giving her a mixed review.

"Madonna seemed like Roman royalty when muscle-bound men carried her extravagant throne across the football field to the stage for her opening song, “Vogue.”

The singing and dancing on that song was smartly choreographed, as Madonna moved more deliberately but still adroitly in moves that took into account that she’s now in her 50s. She briefly appeared to stumble at one point while trying to make a step on the stage set, but recovered in time."

"Madonna carried gold pompons for a performance of her new single. Twitter was alight with questions about the vocals being lip synched or augmented by tapes, particularly during this song.

At the end of her lines, M.I.A. appeared to sing “I don’t give a (expletive),” although it was hard to hear clearly. Her extension of a middle finger to the audience was clearly visible, though. The camera shot briefly blurred after that, but too late."

"The veteran star’s vocals were not strong throughout, lending to the sense of distance during the spectacle."

"For all the pomp and excess of Madonna’s Super Bowl halftime show, it is likely to be a single extended middle finger by guest singer M.I.A. that is most remembered. The gesture, accompanied by a barely disguised expletive, came during a performance of Madonna’s new single.."

I suppose she felt that she had to do SOMETHING to get the media's attention. "Remember Me! Remember Me! Put me in the news! Look at me! Buy my new song!". The boob exposure had already been done by Jackson..

              MIA is worth knowing.

The middle finger wasn't directed toward anyone in particular, it was just part of the performance.

She's an amazing philantropist and talent when it's all known. Rolling Stone called her one of the most influential people on the planet a few years back.

Truth is, she's a bit long in the tooth for the act she tries to present - Despite her passion for reinvention the format alas remains basically the same. Time and tide is creeping up on her and it is evident in her performance. Perhaps she needs to try something alittle different - She has however, a terrific back catalogue, no question.

Was a bit boring and the whole choreography seemed out of sync.

How about a good band or singer.

A few years ago, they had, I believe, The Who It was cool listening to the songs, like Pin Ball Wizard.

Kinda of boring - the singing which I couldn't understand or hear to well, as well as everything in it.

A couple of years ago I went to a concert at Saint Michele's Winery (Redmond, WA) to watch the Moody Blues - they were awesome as always. Now that would have been an awesome show - I'm Just A Singer In A Rock and Roll Band.

The international news service AFP (Agence France-Presse) has given Madonna a glowing review for tonight

              http://news.yahoo.com/madonna-dazzles-super-bowl-half-time-show-031328499.html

The glittering 12-minute performance at Lucas Oil Stadium featuring several guest stars had legions of fans racing to Twitter to give their thumbs-up, with some going so far as to declare it one of the best in Super Bowl history.

"Now THAT was a halftime show!" said @michaelsette7 of Toronto in a typical tweet of approval. "All hail the queen. Bow down everyone, bow down!"

              Uh, no.

I'll stick with C+. It wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen, but I wouldn't pay money to see it either.

According to the Detroit News, the entire performance was lip synched.

To me, if you are not singing live, you are only giving half of the performance.

I've seen it reported as several things--live, lip synced, live with back tracks. I've seen her in concert several times, and my impression was that parts were done live (non-rap portions of Vogue, the clips from Express Yourself and Open Your Heart, and the whole of Like a Prayer). Most of the articles i have read going into this said that it's almost impossible to do a fully live show in a setting like this because of the rapid set-up and tear-down and lack of time for a proper sound check.

Prince was live a few years back... But then there are no musicians in pop/rock that compare to Prince. He is really the only one I remember as being live in the past 10 years. Really.. he is the only performance I can remember at all for the last 10 years.

You knew Prince was live because they did his sound check pretty much on the fly in the first minute... You could hear it going on.

I can remember the first time I saw a Madonna video at my sister's house. I didn't even have cable then.

I was standing in front of the TV with my mouth open in awe. I thought she was great. My sister came into the room and told me to turn it off.

I asked her why, I told her I liked it, being the first music video I had ever seen. My sister replied,

"You wouldn't like Madonna as much if you had any kids." She may have been right as Madonna was controversial at that time.

I have since bought almost every CD Madonna ever made and love listening to her to this day.

It was better than that disaster last year with the Black Eyed Peas in their onesies, but not by much.

Madonna can be a great performer, but that halftime show was over the top tacky. Not to mention the choreography was loose the whole way through, like they had put the whole thing together in one day.

The people that put these things together haven't figured out that sometimes simpler is better.

I think it was beautiful and grandiose and judging by the reception of the public attending the game it was a succes.

What I appreciated very much about the show was its ending message to over 100 millions in the World : "WORLD PEACE" Super Beautiful message and completing well Madonna's show. Bravo to all those who participated. Merci aussi aux membres du "Cirque du soleil". Thank YOU. Congratulations to both teams...

I watched the Super Bowl with friends though I am not a football fan. I know little about the season or teams. I was surprised to see Madonna as the half-time show. I would have liked to have seen Lady Gaga. The choreography and special effects were interesting.

She was not singing live... None of them were. It was obviously pre-taped and dubbed in. But I was in music for years, and I sing, so it is easy for me to tell when someone isn't doing it live. They all missed mic calls when you heard their voice but the mic wasn't close enough and if they were live mics you would have heard Cee's clapping on the mic. Their breathing was off on MANY occasions as well.

I think what they did was during rehearsals they taped and choreographed the whole show and then ran that recording during the actual show.

Nobody will admit to it, but the best half time show in the last 10 years is still Prince. The greatest pure musical genius and musician of the last century (for rock/pop anyway). That show was live and entertaining.

the acoustics wouldn't allow for it to be sung live. It really isn't about the singing though, it is about the entire show.

Well.. as a musician I totally disagree, but music today isn't about talent... It is totally about show, so in that regard you are certainly right.

Again... Prince came out and did a fully completely live show a few years ago. But again... he is a musician... Most of your Top 40 people today are not musicians. They are pretty people who can dance, and stay thin, or have some other feature to sell them to teenagers.

the halftime show isn't about music though. That is the problem that people don't seem to get. The entire superbowl is about the show (It usually certainly isn't about football, though this year was a nailbiter but normally it is fairly lopsided).

Besides, if I am going to go for music, a stadium is probably the least pleasurable place to listen to it.

I have a feww thoughts on the suberbowl in general, but the Madonna halftime show is the culmination of it all. In thinking about the general population of footbal fans, what percentage of those fans does would you think were also Madonna fans in her prime, much less a Madonna that is 2 decades past her prime? Liberally, perhaps 2-3%? So why Madonna in the first place?

Other thoughts... How is NBC even allowed to host the supebowl? Is there any worse network to watch football on than NBC? NBC hasn't even figured out how to add a line of scrimmage to the field! This rotation of networks is rediculous, the network that provides the best football viewing should be the host of the most watched and anticipated game. FYI, for non-football fans, the rankings of networks for football viewing are as follows: Fox>ABC/ESPN>CBS>>>>>>NBC. The ultimate channel would be a melding of Fox to include CBS's breakdown of the drive they do when the offense gets into the endzone.

BTW, sam, your analysis of the halftime show was spot on.

                      peapod.

it is all about money, the network that spends the most money, wins.

If an entity offered a billion dollars to the NFL to just not broadcast the superbowl, they just might bite on that one. It has nothing to do with quality.

I'm just taking solace that it will be three more years till another NBC superbowl. Money certainly plays the largest part, but qualitative measures are also factored in. My point is that the qualitative measures should play a larger role and the abortion known as NBC football coverage should be stamped out.

Fox does an excellent job, ABC does a great job, CBS does a great job... and then there's NBC, simply aweful.

Although I do not own a single madonna song in my VAST collection of music, as a musician, I don't begrudge her her fame or fortune. I even respect her business sense. She used to be able to sing just fine, and I am sure she could have sung just fine at the super bowl as well.....

But that show was NOT live. It was more like karioake, although lavishly produced, and entertaining, it was not live.

The reason for this is not so much Madonna's fault, she is more than capable of playing an event of that size. The producers, on the other hand, want a flawlesss show. To get it, they resort to trickery. They have a couple of hundred performers dancing around, to darw your attention away from the fact that aside from the marching drummers, there were NO MUSICIANS to be seen ! Pretty neat trick....

Lots of bands do this.....I saw Van Halen a few years ago, when they opened their show with " Jump", a keyboard song. There was no keyboard on the stage ! It was ' canned'. I feel that this is cheating. You could have hired a keyboard player !

So as to Madonna's halftime show I will be generous & give it a D. It could have been an A +, but she allowed herself to be talked into the 'safe' route.

                          gary,

most concerts by the 'marketable' bands are lip synced and have been for more than 20 years. It's done for many reasons. Madonna isn't a band, she is a brand, but you don't hear 'madonna and the dancetones', you just have madonna. She is selling a stage show, and it is that stage show.

That is just the industry right now. It has some good points to it, and it has some bad points to it, but quite honestly, I am not going to watch the superbowl halftime show for purity in music performance.

Oh, and Madonna has been lip syncing her shows for decades, she doesn't need to be talked into the safe route because that is how it is done.

Jonathan....sadly, what you say is true. But I must say, that as a musician , it makes me mad ! I feel that there is no honor in it.

When I play somewhere, I PLAY. I don't put a soundtrack on and PRETEND to play.Musicians who do such things, in my opinion, are no more than thieves. Michael Jackson PLAYED. So did Prince, Paul McCartney, and ZZ Top. But Madonna is SOOOOO good and talented that she can just pretend to perform ? WTF ?

                            gary,

there is just as much art in putting on the show as there is in the singing. Nat King Cole never wrote a song in his life, but does that detract from the music that he recorded, hell now.

Is it the same, no, but the objective is entertainment, and as long as the audience is entertained, it is all good.

Besides, there is NO way that someone can dance like she does in her shows and sing at the same time. It just isn't possible.

The problem with 'professional wrestling' is that it is a stage show being presented as a competition. It ends up becoming more of a parity of itself. At least with the Harlem Globetrotters, we know it is an act, wrestling is an act presenting itself as sport.

Nat King Cole did write songs. Exactly how many and how successful they were I am not sure.

One was 'Straighten Up And Fly Right' and another was "This Will Make You Laugh" and I believe there are more. His daughter Natalie has commented on some songs she has recorded that were written by her father.
